About Essex No Dig

We converted to a No Dig garden - Inspired by Charles Dowding.

This was after a very dramtic daily living circumstances change after being diagnose in November 2019, illnesses of Fybromyalgia, Diabetes, SLE Lupus, under active thyroid. All was getting worse to manage with continuing pain day to day. After 3 years or so of mutli tests got finally confirmed and what a battle it has been.

Then all the appointments booked from March 2020 -BOOM! Cancelled because of Covid, left to cope alone. We do understand it hit everyone in March 2020. We are sad and send our love to all those who suffered and or lost loved ones.

 

WE are located on the Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire & Suffolk border, enjoying the air and positive mindful thinking of being outside for our mental well-being now and during Covid.

We enjoy growing vegetables within, 22 bespoke built raised collar beds to cater for our needs,standing with supports or sitting in a wheelchair, due to our daily changable health conditions. The bespoke collar beds are sized 1.2 metres by 1 metre & two purpose built cold frame tops to move onto any cold frame if or when required.

 

We grow potatoes in 35 litre black buckets with handles.

 

The raised plots provide fresh vegetables, salads and herbs from plot to plate almost 12 months of the year.

In the winter months we grow lettuce in the glasshouse or in our 4m polytunnel in trays of recycled mushrooom trays lined with cardboard with the cut and grow again method.

 

We also enjoy growing trailing flowers for hanging baskets (Low maintenance). 34 hanging baskets were achieved for Summer 2022/23 with help from good friends and family & 2023 that included trailing Begonias, Geraniums, lobelia, verbena and in pots, we also enjoy growing Clematis, Lillies, Peonies and a few shrubs.

Most of our success is succession sowing for the veg plots. A choice of young plug plants multi sown and raised in our Polytunnel and glasshouse available on site ready to pop out and into a hole made by dibber and for even the failures too..

 

Compost is a big deal for us and we make our own home made compost adding 1- 2 inches yearly, sometimes twice to our collar beds.

We have made a few tops too, acting as a cold frame top, hinged out of pallet wood with poly carbonate sheets to create a cold frame if we require to warm the soil ealier.

 

 * We are NO Dig!

 

We shred and cut all waste from the kitchen, garden including pruning’s, weeds, (Yes it all goes in the compost) and grass cuttings.

We do mulch the stuff up small and mix layering grass clippings. Coffee grounds are good and Green with added cardboard collected by us over a period. Never have enough and welcome any green waste that is compostable from family, friends and neighbours alike.
